FAQ

If you feel there is a common question that should be added to this list, please let us know.

I am interested in one of your programs, what is the next step?

The best way to learn more about how you or your child can benefit from Tae Kwon Do is to set-up an appointment to meet our instructors, see our school and participate in a free “intro” lesson. New students can begin any day of the week. Please contact us to schedule your orientation class and we can also answer any questions you might have.

How old does my child have to be to start your program?

Participation requires that all students have the ability to listen and follow direction with minimal disruption to the class. Children grow and learn at different levels. Some students in our program have started as young as three years old. Our instructors can help determine if your child is ready for participation in our program.

Is learning Tae Kwon Do going to increase violence in my child?

We are faced with violence everyday from the news, the street, the playground and our entertainment. Tae Kwon Do teaches the physical skills necessary to react to danger if necessary. The philosophy of Tae Kwon Do is about balance, so the mind and spirit are also developed. Control is one of the key elements of Tae Kwon Do, thus your child will be less prone to violence.

My child has ADD/ADHD, will he/she be able to join Ko’s classes?

Increasingly, more and more professionals engaged in the treatment of children diagnosed with ADD or ADHD are recommending that these children become involved in a martial arts program. For many children with Attention Deficit Disorder, our program provides an ideal place to increase attention span, decrease distraction, develop motor and behavioral control, improve self-esteem, and build positive peer relationships.

Do I have to be in good shape before I start training at Ko’s?

One of the biggest misconceptions about studying Tae Kwon Do is that you have to already be in shape to learn. Most students come to us looking to get fit and to develop a healthy lifestyle by learning something interesting that they can do for the rest of their lives. Of course it is always important to contact your physician before starting any physical exercise program.

How many belts are there, and what purpose do they serve?

Advancement in Tae Kwon Do is symbolized by a series of twelve increasingly darker colored belts. At Ko’s Black Belt Academy, those belts are: white, yellow, orange, green, purple, blue, brown, red, red-tip, recommended black, and full black. Different martial arts schools, and even some other Tae Kwon Do schools, use different colors. The purpose however, is the same: to provide students with a system for measuring progress through short-term goals on route to the long-term goal of black belt.

How is Tae Kwon Do different from other Martial Arts?

The asian martial arts all originated from different countries thousands of years ago as forms of self-defense. Karate comes from Japan, Kung Fu from China, and Tae Kwon Do is native to Korea. In terms of techniques, Tae Kwon Do emphasizes kicking more than any other martial art, making it ideal for improving balance, flexibility, and coordination.

What affiliations is Ko’s Black Belt Academy associated with?

Our academy follows the training guidelines set forth by the World Taekwondo Federation and Kukkiwon. We are also supporters of USA Taekwondo (formally the United States Taekwondo Union). USA Taekwondo is recognized by the US Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee as the National Governing Body for the sport of Taekwondo in the United States.
